He is a former prosecutor, attorney general and a native and lifelong resident of Cedarville. When Cedarville was laid out originally, it was called Milford. Cedarville was laid out in 1816. However, a U.S. Post Office under the name “Massie’s Creek” was established there in 1837 in the village. In 1843, the village’s name was changed to Cedarville. It was given that name because of the growth of cedar trees near that first town site. Historically, most of the public life in Cedarville was centered around its Opera House, which still stands today as a national historic site on the Register of Historic Places. Additionally, since 1887, Cedarville has also been home to the well-known Cedarville University, which is a Baptist college.
