Enon has a rich history that goes back to native cultures back in prehistoric times. Today, the village has a population of around 2,517. Enon is located in Clark County near Springfield. It was laid out in 1838. Its name means “abundance of springs.” Enon was incorporated as a village in 1850. The city is home to the Enon Adena Mound, which was also known as Knob Prairie Mound. This historic native American mound is the second-largest cone-shaped mound of its kind in the state. Historians say it was built by the Adena Indians. As the principal village in Mad River Township, Enon is located along the old Springfield and Dayton Turnpike, which is almost eight miles southwest of Springfield. The city is home to a major Indian trail that ran between the Indian Villages of Old Piqua and Old Chillicothe. Prior to Western civilization, the area had at least three distinct groups of natives.
The oldest group that called the area their home was the Adena. After the Adena came the Hopewell. Much was learned about the Hopewell from the excavations of the Campbell mounds. The most recent native group in the area was the Shawnee Indians. They lived at Old Piqua, which is the current site of the George Rogers Clark Park. Prior to 1798, the first European settlers came to Mad River Township. From 1817 to 1838, historians say the area was a robust agricultural center.
