Jamestown is known as a historic farming town. The community is said to be “A Progressive Community of Farmers, Families and Friends.” Nevertheless, Jamestown started out small in the early 1800s. Eventually, it grew into what it is today. Today, the village has a population of 2,150. It is located east of Xenia in rural Greene County. Joshua Bradley is the current mayor of Jamestown. Named after Jamestown, Virginia, the village was laid out in 1816.
In its early years, village officials say immigration was slow and gradual. Then, in 1826, William Baker of Kentucky is said to have visited the town to visit his uncle. Based on his impression from that visit, he eventually moved here in 1831 and built a small frame that’s now occupied by Johnson’s grocery and provision store. Later, he began manufacturing harnesses. Originally, Jamestown had only around ten families living in there. Farmers in the area growing grain found an ideal market for their product in nearby Xenia and provisions often were obtainable in Dayton. This is what helped sustain the town. With an area of 1.17 square miles, Jamestown is located in Silvercreek, Ross and New Jasper Townships. It is located south of U.S. Route 35 and State Route 72, east of Lake Shawnee.
