Kettering was named after the famous inventor from the area, Charles Kettering. The city is the largest suburb of Dayton, Ohio, with a population of more than 55,271. The city is located in both Greene and Montgomery counties, just to the south of Dayton. Originally, Kettering was first settled between the late 1700s and mid-1800s. Although the area was mostly farmland in the early days, the town’s population eventually grew similar to other towns in the area. In 1841, this growth resulted in the formation of Van Buren Township. By 1952, more than a century later, voters in the township approved to incorporate into the Village of Kettering. Historians say Kettering gets its name after the inventor, Charles F. Kettering, who lived and worked here. His home, which is called Ridgeleigh Terrace, is famous. He lived there from 1914 until he died in 1958. Kettering was known for his many inventions and contributions to the Dayton area. From the time of the 1950s up into the 1970s, the population in Kettering continued increasing. This brought in more than 30,000 residents. A lot of this growth was in part because so many people started to move out of Dayton after World War II.
Nevertheless, ever since the 1980s, the city has been experiencing a slow decline in its population because of its aging population and a decline in the number of manufacturing jobs available. With a total of 20 parks sprawling over a combined 284 acres, Kettering is home to the Fraze Pavilion, which is a major outdoor entertainment venue that serves as a host for the summer concerts of the Dayton Philharmonic. Kettering is also the home of the James S. Trent Arena. The Trent Arena opened in 2005; it has a total seating capacity of 4,400. It is also home to Skate Plaza, which is a 40,000-square-foot skateboard park that opened the same year in collaboration between the city and a national celebrity and professional skateboarder who grew up in Kettering. That local celebrity, Rob Dyrdek, is still featured on MTV.
